Strange Distortion on the staircase

This photograph was taken on a workshop at the Old Adelaide Gaol one night.  The people were allowed this night to visit the old Governors Quarters upstairs.  The stairs had apparently been feeling uncomfortable and when the photograph was taken there was 2 areas of distortion on the staircase.  Ghostly image or just a camera glitch e.g. slow processing in some areas?
