THE ADVERTISER NEWSPAPER

ADELAIDE, APRIL 24, 1994

  'I bought a haunted house'

When young Adelaide businessman Tony Syrianos bought a $1.2m Medindie mansion, he inherited something he didn't bargain on...a ghost that lives in the house. The spirit appears in the form of a woman, aged between 15 and 20, who wears a white nightgown with a white, frilly neck. Nicknamed Mary Lou, she appears only between 11pm and 5am and walks between an upstairs bedroom called the Blue room, a bathroom and an extravagant staircase. And although Tony is yet to meet his "friendly" housemate, the high-flying business executive, 23, is attempting to rid his "haunted house" of its supernatural forces. Last night he had the house blessed by a member of the Greek Orthodox Church and plans to call in a parapsychologist to make contact with the spirit.

"I am not very comfortable sharing my house with a ghost,” Tony said. "The former owner was happy to live here with a ghost. She even found it comforting knowing the ghost was about the place, but not me, it spooks me a bit. I want to remove the ghost from the house for my own peace of mind, but also maybe help it find peace by returning it to where it rightfully belongs".

The mansion was built by the original owner of Harris Scarfe department store, Mr. Claxton Scarfe at the turn of the century and it is listed as one of Adelaide's top 10 residential landmarks. Since buying the old house late last year, Tony has been told many stories about the ghost. Stories suggest the spirit is a young girl who either lived in, or was visiting the mansion in the 1920s when she died of tuberculosis, according to Tony's research. The blue room could have been her bedroom. This theory is supported by stories that attempts by previous owners to redecorate the room have been met with hostilities from the ghost, including objects flying across the room and eerie noises. Workers employed at various times have reported "a cold eerie presence" in certain rooms.
